DCAC’s Internship Program benefits from the passion, commitment, and willingness to learn of graduate and undergraduate students from throughout the Denver metro area.
In return, we offer students the opportunity to gain valuable, hands-on experience in their chosen field.
Prevention Internship Expectations and Criteria
Bachelor level interns provide prevention services to children in Denver Public Schools. The focus of this internship position is to facilitate in-class lessons on personal safety for children ages 3-11. These lessons will teach children essential, self-protective skills to keep them from potentially abusive situations.
When not presenting in classrooms, bachelor level interns have the opportunity to shadow forensic interviews, meet with therapists about trauma specific modalities, and provide support at the front desk.

A 1-semester commitment

Bilingual preferred but not required.

Therapy Internship Expectations and Criteria
- Student Internship Requirements: Currently enrolled in a Master of Social Work, counseling, or related degree program with appropriate foundational knowledge to begin seeing clients in individual therapy.
- Provide cover letter & resume, pass background checks, and participate in an interview process.
- Commit to two semesters (or three quarters) at DCAC (minimum nine months).
- Commit to at least 15 hours per week at DCAC:
- Must be available to see clients at least one evening (until 7PM) to accommodate clients’ schedules.
- Ideally would be available virtually on Fridays from 9AM to 10AM for clinical meetings/ group supervision.
- Participate in at least one hour per week of individual supervision with assigned supervisor.
- Passion for working with children ages 3-17 and their non-offending caregivers who have traumatic experiences.
Internship Responsibilities:
- Conduct initial clinical assessments for clients and non-offending caregivers.
- Develop treatment plans for the clients and non-offending family members.
- Implement appropriate, evidence-based, therapeutic interventions for clients and non-offending family members.
- Maintain case files and progress notes.
- Maintain an orderly therapeutic environment through cleaning up after client therapy sessions and re-stocking supplies as needed.
- Participate in staff meetings and in any other administrative or clinical meeting scheduled by Program Director, Executive Director, or Direct Supervisor.
- Participate in support services meetings with families, staff, and other professionals.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with other members of DCAC staff and programs.
Refer children and/or families for further assessment or therapy as needed.
