Each year, Denver authorities receive several thousand reports of abuse and neglect. Following investigation, well over a thousand of those reports are substantiated.
DCAC coordinates the multidisciplinary team that responds to reports of child abuse, and provides crisis intervention, forensic interviews, assessment and treatment, and family support to more than a thousand children and their caregivers annually.
Nearly half of the children we serve are between birth and age six. More than half of the families we see are Latino and Spanish-speaking families comprise at least one quarter of our treatment caseload.
Prevent Child Abuse
Our goal is to reach many more children before abuse can occur, and since 2005, our prevention program, Denver Safe from the Start, has grown to serve more than two thousand children annually, as well as their parents and teachers.
We are proud to have built a reputation for leadership in the area of child abuse prevention and the treatment of trauma through our many training opportunities.
Our goals are to:
- Meet the child’s complete health, mental health and welfare needs
- Prevent abuse and violence through education and outreach
- Break the cycle of abuse and violence by engaging the entire family
- Ensure that every high-risk child who has been traumatized by neglect, abuse and violence in the Denver metro area receives immediate, compassionate and effective treatment
